Hope is dope: Local business promotes breast cancer awareness

Breast cancer survivors will serve as models at Gypsy Moon Boutique in Harrisburg on Saturday.

To promote breast cancer awareness, and the launch of the Motto Originals clothing line, a special event will be held at the store, with 10 percent of all sales from the "Hope is Dope" t-shirt going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Tina Gibbs, co-owner of Gypsy Moon Boutique said that Saturday's event was the result of a business trip to Las Vegas that she and co-owner Beth Moore took in February, where they looked for specially designed t-shirts to sell in the store.

"Some of the shirts we were looking to find, we weren't finding. Over some conversations on that trip, we decided, 'Why can't we design the kind of shirts we want, with the sayings we want?'," Gibbs said. So, the two purchased their own equipment and materials, and started the Motto Originals clothing line.

To help promote the event, the Harrisburg High School art teacher and sponsor of the Art Club Natalie Jones, brought members of the Art Club to Gypsy Moon to decorate the doors and windows with pink ribbons and red lips - the logo of Motto Originals.

"I think it's really good to be involved in the community whenever you can be," Jones said. "Being asked to do that is really an honor in itself."

"We're nice people," chimed in senior Alexis Howard.

The Motto Originals "Hope is Dope" t-shirt has two designs, and will be sold at Gypsy Moon. The longer, scoop-bottom shirt is $25, while the standard t-shirt is $20. Sizes will range from x-small to 3x-large. Saturday's event will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the store. Throughout the launch party, breast cancer survivors will stand in the windows of Gypsy Moon, to model the newly-launched shirt.
