SIC students wait tables to raise money

HARRISBURG – Students from Southeastern Illinois College's cosmetology program raised money for their upcoming spring educational trips by waiting tables at Ponderosa in Harrisburg Thursday evening.

Renee Boots and Stephanie Dunning, instructors for the program, said the students will use the funds raised for trips in March and April.

"They are raising money for the spring hair shows we go to in Nashville and St. Louis," Boots said.

Experiencing the hair shows is an important part of the students' learning, Boots said.

"It's educational for them. All of the new 2017 hair fashions, along with makeup that are upcoming and new will be shown," she said.

Attending the shows also helps toward state requirements for continuing education credits for student and teacher alike, she said.

Dunning and Boots said licensed cosmetologists must complete 14 hours of continuing education credits every two years, and licensed instructors must complete 24 hours.
