Prep Bowling: Bulldogs move onto Carterville Sectional

The Harrisburg High School girls' bowling team finished third at the Carbondale Regional held at the SIU Bowling Center and will advance to the Carterville Sectional this coming weekend.

Herrin came out on top with Salem finishing second and host Carbondale grabbing the fourth and final spot to advance.

Harrisburg was paced by freshman Claire McDermott and sophomore Elizabeth Davis with 1240 series apiece for the six games, a 207 average.

"I'm really proud of the way our girls competed all day," Harrisburg head coach Doug Cottom said. "We steadily got better as the day went on and actually bowled our best game in game six to pull away and finish comfortably in third place.

"Herrin and Salem are two outstanding teams and we will have to step it up to challenge them at the Sectionals, along with Collinsville, O' Fallon and Waterlook, they will be the favorites to come out next Saturday."

The competition will heat up as these four teams will be joined by the likes Collinsville, Alton, Highland, O' Fallon, Belleville East, Waterloo, Columbia and Triad to form the 12-team Sectional.

Play gets underway Saturday morning at SI Bowl in Carterville with the top four teams advancing to the State Finals in Rockford the following weekend.
