Prep T&F: Have A Day!

Harrisburg head coach Zach Cox called Wednesday's meet at Herrin last week just what his Bulldog track and field team needed - and for good reason.

Harrisburg finished first out of 17 teams and winning by more than 30 points.

The Bulldogs finished with 128 points, while Marion was second at 96.5. Carbondale was third with 71 points, while Benton (52) and Herrin (38) rounded out the first five.

Carterville (35), Murphysboro (33), Pinckneyville (28), Du Quoin (25) and Nashville (24.5) rounded out the Top 10, while Sparta (17), Sesser-Valier (4), Wayne City (3), West Frankfort (2) and three other teams finished the field.

It was quite the day for Harrisburg's Corbin Crim, who had a first place finish in the long jump, also setting a PR, as the senior went 21-feet-3. Crim also finished first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.90 and Crim was part of a 4x100 meter relay team that finished first with a time of 43.21.

Dustin Lane (who was also part of the 4x100 relay team, along with Tylor Marler and Cody Rightnowar) had a first place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.13 and took second behind Crim in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.01.

Rightnowar had a first place finish in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.89, while Marler was second at 41.50.

The other first place finish went to the 4x200 meter relay team of Chris Williams, Niko Neal, Aaron Stephens and Lane, who had a time of 1:33.10 for the top spot.

"I told our boys this is why I felt like I had been on them constantly of late about performing at a higher level," Cox said. "They've been sandbagging just a little bit, but I could not be more proud of their performance and more importantly effort. Coach Berry and I were thinking we have not had a more well rounded performance in the six years we have been working together."

Harrisburg littered the scoring sheet with a handful of second place finishes as Kane Carrigan threw 55-feet-8 in the shot put and then had a runner-up finish in the discus, throwing 148-feet-11.

Kody Cavender had a second place finish in the pole vault, clearing 10-foot and Neal ran 14.67 in the 110 high hurdles, which was also good enough for a PR.

Crim was second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.70, while Marler was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 41.50

"Everyone needs to understand this was an extremely competitive meet. One minutes and 57 seconds wins the 800, 48.8 wins the 400, 60-foot wins the shot, and I could go up and down the list. Carrigan is 55 feet in the shot, Crim is 50.7 in the 400, Lane is 11.01 in the 100, and Neal is 14.67 in the 110's to come in 2nd place for all these guys. Southern Illinois track is legit."

Over the weekend, Harrisburg finished sixth out of 16 teams at the Granite City Invitational.

Carrigan broke his own school record in the shot put with a toss of 57-feet-8, while Crim won the 200 meter dash and Rightnowar had a big PR in the 300 intermediate hurdles, taking third with a time of 40.48.
