Prep T&F: Bulldogs take sixth at Granite City

The Harrisburg boys' track and field team recently took sixth out of 16 teams at the Granite City Invite over the weekend.

Cahokia won the event with 102.5 points, while Edwardsville (97), Marion (74), Belleville West (61) and Collinsville (59) rounded out the first five.

Harrisburg (57) finished above Granite City (55), Waterloo (42.5), Alson (42) and Mascoutah (39) in the Top 10, while Jerseyville (28), Jacksonville (25), Ft. Zumwalt West (21), Highland (16), Springfield Southeast (13) and Troy-Triad (9) completed the field.

"This was a great opportunity for our kids to come up and run against the best in the state regardless of class," Harrisburg head coach Zach Cox said. "We brought 14 kids and it is safe to say we held our own."

Kane Carrigan broke his own school record in the shot put with a heave of 57-feet-8 for a first place finish, while Corbin Crim had a first place finish in the 200 meter dash, crossing the line at 22.67.

There were three personal records set on the day, in addition to Carrigan's toss in the shot put as Cody Rightnowar had a third place finis in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.48, while Aiden Blades had a PR in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:06.43 for a ninth place finish, while Seth Thai also had a PR in the same event, finishing at 2:13.77.

"Corbin and Kane won an event, Cody ran a fast 300's race, and our relays ran great times with just plain bad handoffs," Cox said. "If we get those exchanges down we could've went in the 42's for the 4x100 and sub 1:30 in the 4x200. That would mean we are contention to do very well through the state finals if we can hit those numbers.

"Overall I am extremely pleased and they knew I had set a goal for them to compete well at this meet. They easily accomplished our first goals of the year and we have 3 more to go with the conference meet, Top Two at Marion Relays, and eight events to state."
