Sophomore Football: Bulldogs pitch shut out at Mt. Carmel

The Harrisburg High School sophomore football team kicked off their season in style, shutting out Mt. Carmel 21-0 Tuesday night.

Zack Gibbs got the scoring going early when he scored on a three-yard run with 3:13 left in the first quarter. Zack Cowsert provided the point after attempt and Harrisburg led 7-0.

In the third quarter, Gibbs then scored on a 27-yard run with 4:25 left and following the PAT by Cowsert. Brenden Hightshoe scored from one-yard out at 1:39 in the fourth quarter.

Harrisburg head coach Kyle McGowan felt his kids played hard and gave a great effort, but also knows that going up to Mt. Carmel and getting a win is an even bigger feather in the Bulldogs' cap.

"Defensively, we played a great game," McGowan said. "Anytime you can keep your opponent from scoring, your defense has done an outstanding job. I thought our kids got to the ball and played down hill all night. It was a great effort defensively.

"Offensively, I thought that our line play was consistent and that our backs ran hard. We had five fumbles resulting in turnovers which took away a few good opportunities that we had in the red zone to score. We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball. It was a total team effort and even our special teams played well.
