Prep Hoops Roundup: Gallatin County, Harrisburg pick up road wins

The Gallatin County girls' basketball team picked up its first win of the season, knocking off Massac County 53-22 at the Marion Lady Wildcat Invitational Thursday night.

Gallatin County head coach Robert Patton was more than happy to get the win, noting how well his team played.

"We finally played as a unit and did a lot of things fundamentally sound and I'm very proud of the effort," Patton said. "It's nice to get that first win. This is a big tournament and we're the smallest school here, so without a doubt, it's fun to get that first win."

Hailey Chubb led Gallatin County in scoring with a season-high 24 points, while Caitlin Lynch and Morgan Roderick each added eight points.

Audrey Jackson, Kaylee McGuire and Avery Scates all tacked on three points, while Valerie Ahrens finished with two points. Harley Turner and Gracie Sauls each had a free throw for the Hawks in the win.

Harrisbrug 46, Mt. Vernon 44

At Mt. Vernon, Harrisburg kicked off its season with a 46-44 win over Class 3A Mt. Vernon Thursday night, thanks in large part to outback by Matty Hawkins off a Lotte Miller miss with 10 seconds to play.

Harrisburg trailed 15-8 after one quarter of play, but railed in the second quarter to take a 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Bulldogs extended that lead to 33-28 after three quarters of play and held on for the two-point win.

Miller had a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Hawkins added eight on the night.

Jessica Hopson contributed with seven points, while Madeline Rider and Karsyn Davis each chipped in with six points. Toni Crisp finished with four points and Shianne Barker had two for the Bulldogs.

Harrisburg shot 14-for-43 from the field and went 2-of-16 from 3-point range, but held Mt. Vernon to 32 percent as the Rams went 12-of-37 from the field and made six triples on the night.

Goreville 66, Eldorado 30

Eldorado dropped its season opener, falling at Goreville 66-30 Thursday night.

Jade Hise had a team-high 11 points for the Eagles (0-1), while Paige Munds and Rachel Stafford each finished with five points. Madison Newton tossed in four points, while Olivia Parker tacked on three points. Zakiya Britton and Lexa Carney both had a free throw.

Both Harrisburg and Eldorado return to the hardwood Monday as two of the five participants in the Harrisburg Invitational at Davenport Gymnasium.
