Prep Girls Hoops: Off & Running

It was a good night for girls basketball clubs from Saline County to open the 31st annual Harrisburg Preview Tournament Monday evening at Davenport Gym. The hosts held off West Frankfort 66-61 while Eldorado opened the night by holding on for a 30-29 win over Carmi-White County.

Harrisburg (2-0) had four players in double figures in its win over the Redbirds, including senior Toni Crisp who paced her club with 15 points

Junior guard Lotte Miller added 14, and teammates Jessica Hopson and Karsyn Davis each added 13.

"We aren't a team that is going to have one person score all of our points," said Harrisburg coach Jake Stewart. "We are going to have to score as a team and play as a team, and I'm very proud of our kids for doing that tonight."

HHS enjoyed a 30-24 halftime edge before Frankfort opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to take a brief lead.

Missouri S&T commit Morgan Griffith scored 29 points for the Redbirds.

"West Frankfort is a good team and Morgan Griffith is hard to stop," said Stewart. "We told our kids she is probably going to get 20 or 30 (points), but I thought we did a really good job of containing everyone else."

Harrisburg led by double figures midway through the final quarter when Hopson nailed a 3-pointer on one possession before dishing off an assist to Crisp the next time down the floor which extended the lead to 53-43.

Harrisburg is idle in the five-team round robin until Wednesday evening at 7:30 when the Lady Bulldogs will meet Carmi.

"Carmi is a good team and someone we thought could compete for the title coming into this week and Eldorado knocked them off tonight," said Stewart. "That's how good this tournament is."

Eldorado 30, Carmi-White County 29

Paige Munds and Rachel Stafford both had nine points as Eldorado overcame a slow start to take down Carmi.

The Lady Eagles spotted Carmi a 12-4 lead after the first quarter before pulling to within 16-15 at the break.

Takiya Britton scored six points for EHS who was just 1-of-6 from the foul line.

"I think I need a Prozac after that game," said Eldorado coach Scott Artman. "We teetered on the edge the whole night. Carmi has a good team. We aren't coming along nearly as effectively as I thought we would be right now they way they've been playing in practice."
