Prep Girls Hoops: Galatia goes 1-4 at Hamilton County

The Galatia girls' basketball team picked up its first win of the season, knocking off Webber Township 49-46 at the Hamilton County Tournament Friday.

Galatia is now 1-4 on the season as the Bearcats put three players in double figures in the win.

Kennedy Harris had a team-high 17 points, while Kassidy Rizor knocked down 14 points and Mallory Mays tacked on 10 points in the win.

Bailey Crisp finished with four points, while Madison Murphy and Emma Reagan both had two points in the win.

"We were able to create driving lanes through better ball movement and got to the rim," Galatia head coach Denise Clayton said. "This was the first game we have been able to do that and coach (April) Horning has been working hard with the guards and you can see it starting to pay off for us.

"Kenny played a very aggressive defensive game and was able to score off her steals and get to the line. We also did a much better job of blocking out and rebounding."

On Saturday, Galatia lost a pair of games at the Hamilton County Tournament, falling to Wayne City 28-24 and lost to Lawrenceville 55-15.

In the loss to Wayne City, Harris netted nine points, while Madison Murphy and Mallory Mays each finished with five points. Reagan and Crisp each had two points, while Kelsi Watson had a free throw.

In the loss to Lawrenceville, Mays had seven points, while Murphy scored six. Crisp and Dixon each had a free throw.

Galatia played without Rizor on Saturday, who was sidelined with an ankle injury and Clayton said because of that, she feels her team learned a valuable lesson.

"I think we learned a valuable lesson in this tournament, it takes an entire team to compete with the good basketball teams," Clayton said. "We missed Kassidy and her experience on the court and the scoring that she adds to our team. We lacked a team effort on offense against Wayne City and we didn't have the ball movement we needed to score. We did a great job on defense against their post players. Mallory Mays was awesome in her defensive play and held their big to just eight points. "

Galatia returns to action Thursday at home against Pope County.
