Prep Girls Hoops: Tigers trip up 'Dogs

Herrin used a big third quarter and was able to hang on for a 54-48 SIRR Ohio win at Harrisburg Wednesday night in what was the first home setback of the season for the Lady Bulldogs.

Harrisburg had opened the season with nine straight wins at Davenport Gym and had knocked off the same Herrin club by 19 points a little over a week ago at the Herrin Holiday Hoops Tournament.

Harrisburg trailed 51-48 and had three turnovers in the game’s final 30 seconds Wednesday night.

Lady Bulldog coach Jake Stewart received back-to-back technical fouls and was ejected with 1.7 seconds remaining.

Hannah Groutage had 19 points, including 17 in the second half for the Lady Tigers (12-6, 4-1) who trailed 19-12 at halftime.

“Once they started hitting those outside shots, I thought we had to go out and guard them, but then that let Groutage loose on the inside,” said Stewart. “That is what makes them good. They are a really good inside-out team.”

Emma Deaton knocked down five of Herrin’s eight 3-pointers to finish with 15 points.

Harrisburg put three individuals in double figures. Lotte Miller paced her club with 14 points. Karsyn Davis dropped in 13 for HHS (12-5, 2-3) and Matty Hawkins added 12 points before fouling out.

The Lady Bulldogs went nearly five minutes before getting on the scoreboard to start the contest.

Herrin was limited to just one field goal in the second quarter.

Harrisburg returns to action at Meridian next Monday. The Lady Bulldogs will host Wayne City next Tuesday night in a game that will be played at Harrisburg Middle School.

Herrin will travel to Benton next Tuesday before playing host to Anna-Jonesboro next Thursday.

Harrisburg won Wednesday’s junior varsity contest 53-33.
