Gillespie named new head coach at Marion

They say you can always go home and for Gus Gillespie, the return to southern Illinois is one that he intends to fully embrace.<br />On Tuesday night, Gillespie was hired as new head boys' basketball coach at Marion High School, replacing Dave Brown.<br />Gillespie had spent the last 13 seasons at Marshall County High School, where he went 293-119 before being fired by the school on March 23. Gillespie won the First Region Tournament in in 2011 and 2012. The Marshal's went 21-11 this past season, losing the Fourth District Championship game at home and were knocked out of the regional tournament in their first game.<br />In 2004, Gillespie resigned from Centralia to take the job at Marshall County after just one season on the job with the Orphans.<br />Gillespie was hired away from Robinson High School, where the took the Maroons to the Class A quarterfinals in 2002.<br />Gillespie is a native of Lawrenceville and married to Janna, a native of Benton, Ky. <br /><br /><em>Michael Dann covers prep and college sports for the Harrisburg Daily Register and Eldorado Daily Journal.
