Today's News: Our Take - The Walking Dead Postmortem: Michonne's Past Revealed?
[Warning: This story contains major spoilers from Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead and the comics that the AMC series is based on.]
Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead surprised viewers in more ways than one. While everyone is focusing on this new murderer who now haunts the halls of the prison - we hear whoever fed the walkers rats and whoever killed Karen are likely the same person - the writers slid in a very poignant scene that may have gone unnoticed.
The Walking Dead Season 4 brings a "smorgasbord of threats" to test each character
After getting injured, Michonne (Danai Gurira) finds herself stuck at the prison, the claustrophobic polar opposite of the months she spent out trying to track down The Governor (David Morrissey) in nearby regions. During her confinement, Michonne displays a very curious reaction when Beth (Emily Kinney) hands her baby Judith. Michonne starts to cry while holding the baby, such an uncharacteristically sentimental reaction that raises the question of whether the katana-wielding heroine had a baby (or babies) of her own before the zombie apocalypse.
"That's an interesting one. You have some good ideas," Gurira tells us, explaining that she knows exactly what that scene meant, but has to play coy.
As do executive producer Robert Kirkman and showrunner Scott Gimple, who both flat-out refused to answer that question. "You saw her holding that baby and crying and that is absolutely in service to a story," Gimple says. "That wasn't random. Your questions will be answered. That is an important moment for the character and the series."
The Walking Dead bosses tease Season 4's new threats, new characters and old foes
"At the end of this season, you'll learn more about Michonne than all of Season 3," Kirkman teases. "That scene in Episode 2 with Michonne is the beginning of a very long story about her that will be told over the course of this season that is going to really open her character up. We're going to see what really makes her tick. This season, more than any other, these characters are going to be fundamentally challenged."
[Warning: Stop reading if you don't want to know possible spoilers about Michonne.]
Fans of the comics already know some of Michonne's background: the divorced mother of two lost both of her daughters in the zombie apocalypse. Prior to the outbreak, she had been dating a man named Mike, who ends up being one of her infamous pets (aka those armless, jawless zombies on chains) after he is bitten.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
