Supernatural Episode Recap: "I'm No Angel"
On this episode of Supernatural, Cas experiences life as a homeless human. What makes this life difficult is that the fallen angels are hunting him. Meanwhile, the Winchesters try to find Cas, and Dean's having a tough time dealing with the confusing Sam/Zeke situation.
Making his way to the Winchester bunker is taking a human Cas forever. He's down and out. He wears clothes that don't get covered up by a trench coat (and he looks good doing so). He cleans up trash in order to make a little money. He finds falling asleep a bit of a process and doesn't know how to count sheep. And he wisely gets a tattoo that prevents angels from finding him.
He's also figuring out the annoyances that come with having a human body and learns about the "sucks to be you" part of human existence when he finds out the girl he just slept with is really a reaper hired to hunt him down. He realizes that life is fleeting. He isn't human long before he dies only to be healed by Ezekiel.
As for the brothers, the whole Sam/Zeke switcheroo game is proving rough on Dean. In the blink of a (glowing) eye, Zeke surfaces to offer his thoughts on what's going on with Sam. We find out the younger Winchester is healing slowly. I love that Ezekiel is trying to prove that he's useful to Dean. However, Dean needs to get better at handling these situations. He constantly has to cover for how he knows things, such as the fact there are warring angel factions out there or suddenly knowing Cas' location. Sam's a smart guy. He has to be suspicious already. If he's not, he will be soon.
But how funny is it when Dean purposely tries to reach Zeke to set "plan B" into motion? He's all: "I'm letting you know" and Sam's like, "What the hell?" Thankfully, Zeke knew enough to take over pronto.
I'm a sucker for Team Free Will, so I love when the Winchesters were finally reunited with a tied-up Cas. April is in the midst of interrogating him about Metatron. Sam and Dean barge in, and, after a bit of a struggle, Dean kills April. Unfortunately, Cas succumbs to his wounds. Even though Sam was knocked unconscious, Zeke surfaces and heals Cas, allowing Dean to say: "Never do that again!" I love the Dean/Cas friendship.
What sucks is Cas looks all happy and at home in the Men of Letters bunker, and there's talk about being human and hedonism. But he can't stay. Ezekiel feels as long as the fallen angels are out to get Cas, he's in danger too. He says that if Cas stays, he'll have no choice but to leave and Sam's body is not ready for that. So Dean is forced to tell Cas he has to go. Boo.
I also don't like the fact the episode ends with "Listen buddy, you can't stay" and then after a close-up of Cas, it cuts to black. We don't know whether Dean tells Cas the entire Sam/Zeke story. So "I'm No Angel" has some really great moments and is plentiful with all things Cas, but it's not as strong as the first two Supernaturals of Season 9.
Little things I liked
-Cas going by the name, Clarence, Meg's nickname for him.
-Dean in a robe.
-Shallow TV Alert: We got more Shirtless Cas. Now that he's human, Cas apparently likes taking his clothes off. And he likes sex. Good for him. Virgin Cas is no more. Also, Cas telling Sam and Dean he had sex with April was hilarious.
-Sam getting eggs and bacon with extra grease for Dean.
-Sam and Dean being smart enough to know they were being tailed. The new Naomi (a fallen angel named Bartholomew) hired the guy because the way to Cas is through the Winchesters.
-Did Dean torturing the reaper bounty hunter remind you a little bit of the way he was in "On the Head of a Pin?" Is it wrong that I loved the way he offed that reaper?
-I like how Cas gets to experience the joys of food (burritos), sex (with April) and friendship (with Sam and Dean).
What I'm struggling with
-I feel like I've read or heard Jeremy Carver or someone involved with Supernatural say that this Zeke in Sam's body story is going to last a long time. I'm not sure if I'm on board with that. Because twice now it's required Sam to be knocked out in a couple of their "battle" scenes so Zeke can do his thing. It takes Sam out of the action. And he's not an "out of the action" kind of guy. And it's requiring Dean to lie a lot, and I certainly don't like that either.
-April the reaper is the one that caught Cas. Couldn't she have told Bartholomew where Cas was? Why is she the one that needed to interrogate Cas? The angels could have descended on their location. I don't get it.
Guest Stars
-Playing Bartholomew was Adam J. Harrington. Love that he's joined the show in what I assume is a recurring role. You know how the CW loves to recycle its actors. Harrington was one of the dads on The Secret Circle. He was also on an episode of Parks and Recreation that I enjoyed.
-And Shannon Lucio played April the reaper. While she recently did a couple episodes ofMarvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I know her best from her days as Ryan's girlfriend, Lindsay, on The O.C.
-He wasn't a guest star, but the director of "I'm No Angel" is Kevin Hooks. These days he's a big time producer / director. But back in the day, he was known for being in front of the camera. His most well known credit was playing Morris Thorpe on the (mostly) '70s series The White Shadow.
