OBITUARY: Caswell V. VanMeter

Caswell V. VanMeter, age 92 of Carrier Mills, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, in the Carrier Mills Nursing Home.

He was born in Saline County to the late Charles A. and Janie Hancock VanMeter. He married the former Erma Jean Martin on Aug. 5, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 19, 2002. Caswell worked for many years at Sahara Coal Co. and worked there until his retirement. He served his country during World War II by being in the United States Navy. Caswell was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Carrier Mills until his health declined and he could not attend.

Caswell is survived by his son and daughter in law Terry and Liz VanMeter of Carrier Mills; three grandchildren, Tara and Donnie Prather, Jody and Brandi VanMeter and Jessica VanMeter; five great-grandchildren, Kellcey, Caden and Joliegh VanMeter and Dillan Harrison and AdaLynn Prather, all of Carrier Mills.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, David Anthony VanMeter; two brothers; and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Carrier Mills. The Rev. Harl Cockrum will officiate. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be private in Salem Cemetery with military rites by Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legions.

Mr. VanMeters' request was that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available the church.
