No charges filed after Monday bomb scare

HARRISBURG - After a Florida man called Saline County Central Dispatch about his fear that a bomb had been planted in his truck, no bomb was discovered and no charges were filed, Harrisburg Police Chief Michael Riden said.

At about 2:48 p.m. Monday, Central Dispatch received a call from the man saying he believed someone had planted a bomb in his truck.

The Illinois Secretary of State Police Hazardous Device Unit was called to complete an inspection of the vehicle and suspected device.

During the situation, the man could be seen being detained by police at one point and being placed into a squad car.

"He was not being very cooperative, and kept trying to go back to his truck. Officers detained him for his own safety," Riden said.

Riden said no bomb was found and officers filed no charges.

"He was from Florida, and was traveling through. He had been here a couple of days and was moving on," Riden said.

Riden was responding to a call at the time the Harrisburg Register/Eldorado Journal inquired about the incident by telephone and could not recall the man's name.

Riden said HPD was assisted at the scene by Harrisburg Fire Department, the Saline County Sheriff's Office and Deaconess EMS in addition to Illinois Secretary of State Police.
