Sara ‘Sally’ D. Schauwecker of Carbondale

Sara “Sally” Schauwecker passed away peacefully Dec. 21, 2024, with her husband, Harry, faithfully by her side along with family and friends.

Sally had bravely fought through her dementia and declining physical health and had a remarkable rebound three months prior to her death. She was able to come home and be with Harry. They cherished those last few months together.

Sally was born July 10, 1937, in River Forest to John and Eleanor Duncombe. She had many fond memories of her childhood and still kept friendships with friends in River Forest/Oak Park. After high school she attended the University of Illinois and was an Illini cheerleader.

Sally and her ex-husband, Ladd Cameron, raised their children, Bruce and Melinda, in Carbondale. They led an active social life. Their home was always welcoming and open to Bruce and Melinda’s friends.

She married Harry Schauwecker in 1989. They especially enjoyed their home at New Thompson Lake and the visits from children and grandchildren. Sally filled her home with her lighthouse, elephant, ladybug, Illini and Hummel collections, but her pride and joy was her lighted Christmas homes display.

Sally worked for many years at B&A Travel in Carbondale and made many friends there before retirement. Sally and Harry made frequent winter trips to Florida to visit family and friends. They had fond memories of vacations to Puerto Vallarta, Germany, Italy, and the Caribbean. She loved to go out to dinner with friends and play golf with her “Nickle Putters” woman’s group.,

Sally always greeted everyone she met with a smile and a compliment.

She was sadly preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Duncombe; her son, Bruce Cameron; her daughter, Melinda Womick; and son-in-law, Bill Womick.

Sally is survived by her loving husband, Harry, her daughter-in-law, Karen Cameron, her grandchildren, Reece Womick, Jackie Womick and Corin Cameron.

Sally will be remembered by her Schauwecker family, Stephen and Jan Schauwecker and their children Emily D’Archangelo (Tavio), Karen Schauwecker (Roy Buck) and Laura Schauwecker (Aaron Burns); Michael and Shelly Schauwecker and their children, Lacey Schauwecker(Steffen Eikenberry) and Paul; and Timothy Schauwecker (Erinn Holloway) and their children, Lily and Joseph; and great-grandchildren Lucas, Olivia, and Leo D’Archangelo, Oliver Burns, and Ada Eikenberry.

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Carbondale with Fr. Robert Flannery officiating. Visitation will be at the church preceding the service 10 to 11 a.m.
