Carmi woman killed in Harrisburg crash

HARRISBURG - A Carmi woman died as the result of a two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon in Harrisburg.

According to an Illinois State Police District 19 crash report, 28-year-old Whitney P. McKenzie was westbound on Illinois 13 at about 1:13 p.m., when her black 2011 Chevrolet Malibu did not yield to oncoming traffic before turning onto Commercial Street in Harrisburg.

An orange 2001 Mack tractor trailer, driven by 28-year-old Carl B. Wood of Eldorado, was traveling east on Illinois 13 when McKenzie's car turned into his path, striking McKenzie's car.

McKenzie was pronounced deceased on the scene according to the crash report. Wood refused medical attention.

The contents of the semi's trailer appeared to have spilled when the semi turned on its side as a result of the collision.

The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate the crash on Thursday, and hours after the wreck Commercial Street was barricaded for several blocks in both directions from the site of the collision.

After the road reopened, a crew of workers continued to remain present near traffic signal devices at the intersection of the two roadways.
