Harrisburg Fire Department lends a hand to West Frankfort

HARRISBURG - Harrisburg Fire Department gave West Frankfort a helping hand when several members of that city's fire department couldn't work due to COVID-19.

Harrisburg Public Safety Commissioner Raymond Gunning said recently the fire department learned that several West Frankfort firefighters either had tested positive for or been exposed to COVID-19 and would be unable to report to work.

"My brother, Fire Chief John Gunning asked if Harrisburg Fire Department could help by providing personnel to staff them for a shift," Raymond Gunning said. "The city decided that yes, this is something we very much wanted to do that."

Gunning said Harrisburg firefighters provided personnel for a 24-hour shift.

"We weren't the only department to help out. There were several," Gunning said. "I think Mount Vernon, Herrin and Marion were just some of the other towns that were assisting West Frankfort."

Gunning said southern Illinois communities often are quick to help each other during times of need.

"I remember everybody came and helped us after the (2012) tornado. and this is just one way we can show our appreciation back to some of the other communities," he said.

He also said Harrisburg has helped out other communities when needed.

"Last year, down at Metropolis, one of their firefighters died, and we sent some guys down there to staff so their firefighters could be in the memorial service," Gunning said. "We don't have a problem doing something like that. We're glad to do it."

Gunning also said he will address an issue at the council meeting Thursday that surfaced earlier this year when a water department deposit disappeared. Illinois State Police has been investigating the incident.
