Today's News: Our Take - Russell Brand Recalls Morning Joe "Hysteria" in New Column
Russell Brand's now-infamous June 17 appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe is one many TV viewers will not soon forget. And it looks like Brand isn't shaking off the awkward encounter either.
In a column for the British newspaper <em>The Guardian , Brand</em> goes into detail about the disastrous incident, in which co-host Mika Brzezinkski and panelists Katty Kay and Brian Shactman pretended that they couldn't understand Brand's thick British accent, referred to him in the third person and, at one point, started referring to him by the wrong name even though he was sitting directly across from them the entire time.

In the column, Brand notes that he immediately felt the bad vibe from the crew, who Brand says were impatient with him and rude to him. "Often when you encounter rudeness from the crew, it is an indication that the show is not running smoothly, perhaps that day, or maybe in general," he wrote. "One of the things that's surprising when you go on telly a lot is that often the on-camera 'talent' (yuck!) are perfectly amiable when you chat to them normally, but when the red light goes on they immediately transform into shark-eyed Stepford berks talking in a cadence you encounter nowhere else but TV-land - a meter that implies simultaneously carefree whimsy and stifled hysteria."
Initially, Brand ignored the hosts' jabs, but he finally cracked and lectured them on good manners. "Why is our culture behaving like this? How has this become normal?" Brand asks in his column. "It is by no means an exclusively American phenomenon, though wherever you encounter it, there is something American about it."
